On average one Australian is diagnosed every hour with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood disorder.
The Leukaemia Foundation has a Vision to Cure and Mission to Care for patients with blood cancers.
The Foundation receives no ongoing government funds and relies on community support from fundraising activities, donations and bequests to continue its work assisting patients and their families.
Its Vision to Cure is manifested in its ongoing investment in medical research projects that are delivering better treatments and higher survival rates.
Twenty years ago, patients diagnosed with leukaemia faced a limited chance of survival.
Today, thanks to research and breakthrough treatments, survival rates for childhood leukaemia are between 70-80%, and about 40% of adults survive acute leukaemia.
But because we will settle for nothing less than a cure, we need to continue funding this vital research.
Through its Mission to Care, the Foundation provides free accommodation to patients and their families needing to relocate from rural and regional centres to be near major treatment centres.
Patients and their families are further assisted by the dedicated professionals in the Foundation's Support Services division who provide information, phone and personal counselling, home and hospital visits, as well as transport to and from treatment centres.
