How will you be remembered?

When commemorating ANZAC Day, how often do we think about how we will be remembered in the years to come and what legacy we will leave for future generations?

Include a Charity, the campaign developed by The Cancer Council Australia, Red Cross, Mission Australia and Heart Foundation, wants to remind Australians of the significance of leaving bequests. While many people are benefiting now from bequests left by past donors, it is important to realise that a sustainable future for charity work depends on a continuation of bequests.

“Many people we speak to who have bequests in their Wills have done so for two major reasons. Firstly, because they want to support particular organisations or causes that have impacted upon them in some way during their lifetime and they want to ‘give something back’. And secondly, because they wanted a method of making sure their memory and values would live on,” continues Jennifer.

“Every year bequests may provide things such as research, information and support for the 3.5 million Australians affected by cardiovascular disease, the 88,000 people diagnosed with cancer, 100,000 homeless Australians and the 40,000 people affected by disasters such as bushfires and floods,” says Jennifer Doubell, spokesperson for Include a Charity.

More than 10,000 bequests are left to Australian charities each year, ensuring future generations are able to receive the benefit and support provided by these charities. Many of the life-saving research programs, support services and community activities carried out by charities would not exist without the support of bequests.

In the wake of ANZAC Day, while remembering those who fought for our country and thanking them for their legacy, remember that you too can leave a lasting legacy. We as Australians are benefiting now from past bequests - think of how future Australians can benefit from your bequest.
