Project Independence

Project Independence is a pioneering charity offering people with intellectual disabilities the rare opportunity to own their own home—using their Disability Support Pension to gradually build equity in safe, supportive housing communities. Founded in Canberra in 2012, PI has already delivered 30 inclusive homes across Canberra, with new developments underway in Melbourne and Sydney.
Our unique Supported Homeownership model blends individual equity, communal living, and live-in support, enabling residents to gain financial security, confidence, and genuine independence. Each development features self-contained units clustered around shared spaces and overseen by a live-in Resident Coordinator to foster community, wellbeing, and day-to-day support.
At Project Independence, we believe that people with intellectual disabilities deserve more than just a roof over their heads. They deserve stability. They deserve dignity. They deserve the joy of saying, “This is my home.” We create supported pathways to homeownership for people who’ve often been left behind by traditional housing models.
It’s more than a housing model. It’s a life-changing opportunity. One where residents grow in confidence, build independence, and form lifelong friendships. For many, it’s the first time they’ve had a front door of their own, a fridge with their name on it, and the pride of being part of something bigger.
By leaving a gift in your Will to Project Independence, you help create a future where people of all abilities can live with freedom, choice, and connection.

Together, we can make homeownership — and hope — possible.
